3GPP LTE Physical Layer

The 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution) project aims to evolve the existing 3GPP mobile telephone standard into an attractive candidate technology for high data rate, low latency, packet based mobile telephony. This 3 day course provides attendees with an understanding of the LTE physical layer modulation and coding schemes defined in Release 8 of the 3GPP standards. This includes presentations and tutorials on the core physical layer technologies such as OFDM, SC-FDMA and MIMO and their application within LTE. The format of the course is a mixture of presentation, hands-on sessions using simulation software, and presenter demonstrations.

The course is suitable for all engineering, technical marketing and technical management staff wishing to gain an in depth understanding of the techniques and processing involved in the physical layer of 3GPP LTE systems.

Event Aim

To present theory, algorithms, receiver structures and actual practicalities of the implementation of DSP algorithms and digital communications architectures for 3rd generation communication systems. On successful completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

Presentation

This is an intensive 3 day course which educates participants in the physical layer of 3GPP LTE systems. This course provides a review of single carrier and OFDM communication systems. An introduction to generic MIMO and multiantenna systems is also given. The course then focuses exclusively on the physical layer of 3GPP LTE systems.

The course format is: 70% Lectures | 20% Hands-on Labs (simulation based) | 10% Demonstrations

The laboratory sessions will use standard compliant physical layer simulation libraries to illustrate and further investigate the presented concepts.

All attendees will receive electronic and printed versions of the teaching materials. A DVD containing all the simulation models used during the course will also be distributed. The notes provided form a superset of the materials presented on the course and will allow further in depth study after the course.

Pre-requisites

This course has been carefully designed to present the complex mathematical theory often associated with wireless systems in an intuitive and straightforward style to a wide audience of engineers and project managers. The following prior experience is also essential: Fundamentals of DSP, Basic digital communication systems, and Bachelor level mathematics.

Prof. Bob Stewart and team Professor Bob Stewart and his team of experienced design engineers from Steepest Ascent of have successfully presented in Europe, United States and Asia. Prof Bob Stewart has extensive experience presenting industry DSP courses in the USA and Europe. He is currently a faculty member of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. Prior to joining the University of Strathclyde, Prof Stewart was a visiting professor in Dept of Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota in 1990, and a visiting scholar at the University of Southern California in 1986/7. Since 1997 he has been a parttime visiting professor at UCLA.
