3GPP UMTS FDD Physical Layer

For the third generation (3G) mobile radio systems, the consumer market is expected to show an increasing demand for services ranging from low data rate voice communication (as provided by 2G standards such as GSM) to high data rates to support multimedia applications with integrated audio and video communications. These emerging demands lead to the technical requirements for IMT2000 - International Mobile Telephones in the Year 2000. Both dedicated circuit and packet switched services will be available and they will operate in environments with the aim of allowing data communication, anyplace, anytime, anywhere.

Content

This course provides an in-depth overview of the physical layer of 3GPP UMTS FDD mode. This includes all the modulation and coding stages, channel coding techniques and physical channels used. The course also provides an introduction to HSDPA and HSUPA.

  • Review of CDMA techniques
  • CDMA within 3GPP UMTS FDD
  • Uplink/ downlink physical channels
  • Uplink HPSK modulation
  • Channel coding techniques
  • HSDPA and HSUPA

Audience

The course is suitable for all engineering, technical marketing and technical management staff wishing to gain an in depth understanding of the techniques and processing involved in the physical layer of 3GPP LTE systems.

Event Aim

To educate participants on the structure and techniques used in the physical layer of 3GPP UMTS FDD mode. On successful completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the structure of 3GPP UMTS FDD physical layer
  • Identify the channel coding techniques applied
  • Understand the difference between scrambling and channelisation
  • Understand the operations and advantages of uplink HPSK modulation
  • Identify the physical channels and their role
  • Appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of rake receivers for 3GPP UMTS FDD
  • Understand the basic structure and operation of HSDPA/HSUPA

Presentation

This is an intensive 2 day course which educates participants in the physical layer of 3GPP UMTS LTE systems. This course provides a review of DSP fundamentals, single carrier and CDMA communication systems. The course then focuses on the physical layer of 3GPP UMTS FDD systems.

The course format is: 60% Lectures | 30% Hands-on Labs (simulation based) | 10% Demonstrations

The laboratory sessions will use standard compliant physical layer simulation libraries to illustrate and further investigate the presented concepts. All attendees will receive electronic and printed versions of the teaching materials. A DVD containing all the simulation models used during the course will also be distributed. The notes provided form a superset of the materials presented on the course and will allow further in depth study after the course.

Pre-requisites

This course has been carefully designed to present the complex mathematical theory often associated with wireless systems in an intuitive and straightforward style to a wide audience of engineers and project managers. The following prior experience is also essential: Fundamentals of DSP, Basic communication systems, and Bachelor level mathematics.
